Facebook addictions

Facebook Addictions

Facebook has become an indispensable way to find old friends, schedule events, play games and even send virtual gifts. But if you’re doing more living online than off, it might be time to reassess. Many students are now seeing Facebook more as an addiction than a networking tool, and psychologists are starting to agree.

Facebook Syndrome: How to tell if you are an internet addict

1. You are late for meetings because you are on Facebook?

If you are late for meetings, appointments or college because you were checking your updates then YOU ARE AN ADDICT!! This is classic addict behaviour.

2. You think about it when you are offline

It is true than many people set there alarms for the middle of the night so they can get up and harvest their fields and feed their animals. The games like Farmville for example are very addictive and are keeping many people from getting college work done. This waking up in the middle of the night to tend to virtual animals is an obvious sign of a problem.

3. Your friends and family comment on your excessive internet use
When other people around you start to notice that you have a problem it is generally a pretty accurate indicator that you are losing it. If your mates, coworkers or family members have made comments about how much you use the internet then you need to read the rest of this post.

4. You check up on your page from your mobile phone
If you are sitting in a lecture no matter how boring it may be and are constantly checking up on your page via your mobile you are an addict!!

5. You get stressed when a Facebook “friend” doesn’t add you
Have you ever noticed yourself getting stressed over something that has happened on Facebook? Do you ever feel like your online life is more real than your offline life? If you have been stressed about what rapper you turned out as or what magic egg someone sent you then it is time to open your eyes.

If you have answered yes to any of these you are an addict! Sorry to break the news!!

Most of use are Facebook addicts but we don’t think much of it. Unfortunatley are social lives will suffer in the long run and our college work may suffer to.

Mobile phones and children

Mobile Phones and Children

Do mobile phones pose any health risk for children?

This question, raised on a number of occasions reflects the concern all parents have for their children and their wellbeing. It also reflects how important mobile phones have become to our everyday lives.

The questions about the use of mobile phones by children was raised in the May 2000 report of a review panel commissioned by the U.K. government, the Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones (IEGMP). The IEGMP reasoned that if there was an - as yet undiscovered - risk it could affect young people more than adults because of the status of their physical development and the prospect of longer lifetime phone usage. They recommended a limited use of mobile phones by children. In 2005 the U.K. National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) backs up the limited use of mobiles by children.

The Government provided funding for a programme called “Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research” (MTHR). The program report3, published in September 2007, states that “Mobile phones have not been found to be associated with any biological or adverse health effects according to the UK’s largest investigation into the possible health risks from mobile telephone technology.”.

In a January 2008 statement, the French Health Ministry confirmed that, to date, there is no scientific evidence demonstrating that the use of mobile phones, either by adults or children, presents any significant health risk. The Ministry still pleads that parents prevent children from excessive use of mobiles as data for very long use are sparse.

Since 2000 about 30 reports by expert panels and government agencies from around the world have agreed that the scientific evidence does not demonstrate any actual health risks from the use of mobile phones operating within international guidelines and this is true regardless of age.

So overall there is no evidence to suggest any health risk from the use of mobile phones but it is still recommended to limit the use of mobiles by kids as data for very long use are sparse.

The factors to consider when buying a laptop!!

The factors you would need to
consider when buying a PC or Laptop for Applied Psychology.

First of I think a laptop would suit the Applied Psychology course more than a PC. I think a laptop would suit any student over a PC for the main reason which is the size and the ability to carry it any where you want.

The size and weight of the laptop:

The size of the laptop you choose is very important because as a student you will have to carry your laptop to and from college everyday, so preferably a small sized ultra portable laptop. One of the most important factors is the weight of the laptop. Its important to compare the travel weight , not just the system weight. The travel weight includes the laptop itself and the power adapter plus the bag.

The Hard drive:

For the Applied Psychology course it is important to have at least 40mb -100mb as this course involves doing work in Photoshop and its files tend to take up a lot of space and as students we will have a lot of work to save over the four years.

Internet Connections:

With free wireless internet in IADT it’s important that the computer you chose has Bluetooth module and Internal Gigabit LAN.

Think About Battery Life

Part of the appeal of a laptop is its ability to travel with you, so battery life will play an important factor in choosing which computer you buy. Make sure you choose a machine with the best battery life (minimum 4 hours). Especially for people who travel from long distances on a Sunday night and have last minute work to do for Monday morning, a long life battery will enable you to get your work done while your stuck on the bus.

What's The Battery Price?
One of the most easily damaged components in a laptop is the laptop battery. You So its advised to check out the battery price of the laptop you intend to buy. They don't come cheap costing approximately 100 euros. It is also advised to protect your battery's life span by charging it up fully, unplug, then let it run down and recharge again.

Do You Need Extended Warranty?
For students I would advise them to get extended warranty because laptops can break easily with all the carrying around students do with them. If the laptop breaks early in its life, you will get a new one replacing it.
